About the Dental Technologists Association

The DTA is a not for profit professional association for dental technicians in the UK. It was established in the 1980’s and was originally called the Dental Technicians Education and Training Advisory Board (DTETAB) with a remit for education and training.

About DTA

We are the voice for dental technicians, whether qualified or in training. The DTA keeps in touch with government departments and other influential bodies within dentistry. We are committed to keeping members in touch with what is going in dental technology as well as the wider dental arena.

The association is managed by dental technicians and policies are decided by elected members, mainly practising dental technicians. The elected Council are supported by a Chief Executive who is based at the DTA head office in Gloucester.

The DTA is a company limited by Guarantee registered in England and Wales. The company registration number is 2476581 and the VAT number is 939 9791 42

Our Vision

'To advance the standards of the art and science of dental technology for the benefit of the profession and patients. To promote the interchange of views between dental technicians and to negotiate on their behalf with various bodies. To raise issues, provide advice and propose ideas to others on matters affecting dental technicians.'

Key Objectives

Be the forward thinking organisation that advises, develops and supports individual dental technicians.
Provide an organisation for the development of the dental technology profession.
Encourage and promote education, including CPD, for dental technicians.
Forge links with other bodies or organisations for the benefit of dental technicians and patients.
Promote the DTA views to Government, relevant groups, service providers and the public.
Adopt and share best practice enabling dental technology to take a wider participative role in the oral healthcare of the nation.
Endeavour to support dental technician members and provide benefits and employment opportunities.
Maintain and develop the ‘job title’ and ‘function’ of dental technicians.

Barry Appleby

Barry is based in Telford where he has owned and run a Commercial Laboratory since 1988. He has been a Crown and Bridge Technician for over 35 years.

Barry is currently President Elect of the DTA, and will take over as President from John Stacey in 2012.

Simon Butler

Simon is based in Romsey where he is a Dental Technician in a Commercial Laboratory, a job he has had since 1989. Simon studied to become a dental technician at Kings College Hospital where he gained a BTEC Diploma in 1986.

Simon is the current Treasurer of DTA.

Tony Griffin

Tony is based in Derbyshire. He has been a self-employed Business Consultant for 3 years having spent much of his career in the education sector. Tony qualified from The People’s College of Further Education and has City & Guilds Intermediary, Final and Advanced Diplomas.

Tony is current Chair of the DCP Committee of the Faculty of General Dental Practice.

John Stacey (President)

John lives in Gloucestershire. He is now retired after a career spanning more than 43 years as a Dental Technician in the Royal Air Force. In addition to his City & Guilds Final, Advanced Prosthetics and Advanced Maxillofacial Technology certificates John has business management qualifications.

He has been President of the DTA since 2010.

Elizabeth Garratt

Elizabeth works for East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust as an Orthodontic Technologist in Burnley General Hospital. She has recently moved to Todmorden in West Yorkshire and enjoys the scenery and hill walking in the area. She qualified in 2011 from Manchester Metropolitan with the BSc(Hons) in Dental Technology and is proud to say she achieved a 1st Class Honours and won that years’ School of Healthcare Science Prize. Her hope is that government cuts don’t stop her career short and she is able to gain funding for her advanced qualifications.

James Green

James is based in London. He is a maxillofacial and dental laboratory manager at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. He has worked at Great Ormond Street since 2004. James studied at Barts and London School of Medicine and Dentistry where he gained a National Diploma and HNC.

James is also a member of the Orthodontic Technicians Association and the British Institute of Dental and Surgical Technologists.

Emma Harrison

Emma is based in Liverpool. She is a Student at Manchester Metropolitan University and hopes to qualify with a BSc (Hons) in 2012 and has worked in two dental laboratories during her studies.

Steve Martin

Steve is based in Southampton. He is a Clinical Dental Technician in a Commercial Laboratory and Dental Clinic. Steve qualified as a Dental technician in 1995 and as a Clinical Dental Technician in 2009. He has a BTEC National Diploma in Science (Dental Technology), Advanced Diploma in Dentistry (Honours) and Dip CDT RCS (Eng).

Mike McGlynn

Mike is based in Bristol, where he is Head of Dental Production Laboratory at Bristol Dental Hospital, a job he has done since 2007. Mike qualified at Matthew Boulton College Birmingham and in 1973 where he gained a City and Guilds Final and City and Guilds Advanced in Ceramics, Crown and Bridge.

Mike is also a member of the British Institute of Dental and Surgical Technologists.

Delroy Reeves

Delroy is based in London. He is a Dental Technician at a Commercial Laboratory a job he has had since 1975. Delroy gained his City and Guilds Final and Advanced BTEC at South London College in 1983 and 1986 respectively.
