DENTAL REGULATOR CLAMPS DOWN ON UNLICENSED OPERATORS (26/10/06)
The General Dental Council (GDC) has today (26 October 2006) challenged in court for the first time the practice of non-dentists offering tooth-whitening treatments.
The GDC brought a case of alleged illegal practice of "dentistry" against Ben Nahab, who pleaded guilty. He had performed a tooth whitening procedure on 18 May 2006. Mr Nahab was convicted, and ordered to pay a fine plus costs and compensation. The case was heard at Norwich Magistrates Court.
The GDC is seeking a landmark ruling so that it can stamp out the practice by non-dentists.

GDC CONSULTS ON GUIDANCE FOR FITNESS TO PRACTISE COMMITTEES (06/10/06)
The General Dental Council (GDC) has developed and consulted upon a number of draft policy and guidance documents to support and underpin the operation of its new Fitness to Practise committees, whose powers came fully into effect in July 2006. For more information about the new GDC fitness to practise procedures, visit our website.
The GDC is now seeking views on three further draft policy and guidance documents to complete this present series of guidance. They cover:
• The Professional Performance Committee
• The Health Committee
• Preliminary meetings prior to fitness to practise hearings - a preliminary meeting should enable directions about procedure and evidence to be given in advance of the formal hearing, where this would assist a fitness to practise committee in performing their functions fairly, justly and efficiently.
To access the consultation documents, please visit the GDC homepage and click on the 'GDC consultation' tab.
For a hard copy of the consultation documents, please contact Laura Brown (email: ftpconsultations@gdc-uk.org, phone 020 7009 2719).
The closing date for responses to the consultation is Friday 27 October 2006.

FIRST DENTAL TECHNICIANS TO REGISTER WITH THE GDC!
Katie Mason and Kevin Tinklin are the first dental technicians to register with the GDC - congratulations to them both.
Katie Mason who manages her own specialist orthodontic laboratory, Ideal Profile, in Kettering is pleased to be joining the register, she said:
"By joining this new register I feel that, at last after many years, my job will be taken more seriously. I believe that the profession of dental technology as a whole will benefit from a more united approach, to be able to tackle what lies ahead in the coming years."
Kevin Tinklin, who works at a commercial laboratory in Nottingham, is pleased to be joining the register, he said:
"At last experienced and qualified technicians have gained recognised status within the profession of dentistry. Now we can justifiably, through our expertise and qualifications, be part of the wider dental team delivering the best care possible for the patient."
Phil Wears who works at York Dental Laboratory is pleased to be joining the register, he said:
"Registration with the GDC is possibly the best thing that could happen to our profession. It will raise the profile of dental technicians and allow us to be recognised as professionals. It will improve patient care and awareness and will raise the standards of work supplied to patients. The new opportunities that will become available will enable technicians to become better trained and educated and more respected as professionals."
