DTA Calls for Accurate Representation of Dental Technicians in Occupational Statistics

By DTA | 24th October 2024 | News

We are greatly concerned over the current categorisation of dental technicians in the UK's occupational statistics released by the UK Government Department for Education in 2024. We have identified that dental technicians are being grouped with medical technicians, which does not accurately reflect the unique challenges and demands of the dental technician profession.

According to the latest statistics, dental technicians are not listed as an occupation in demand. This misrepresentation is alarming given the current crisis facing the profession. The workforce is aging, and there is a significant decline in the number of skilled dental technicians, particularly those specialising in denture fabrication. Without immediate action, the UK could face a severe shortage of dental technicians in the coming years.

The DTA is calling for dental technicians to be recognised as a standalone category in occupational statistics. This change is crucial to highlight the true state of the profession and to address the growing concerns about the decline in the workforce. Additionally, are requesting specific data on dental technicians to better understand and address the challenges faced by the profession. Currently, grouped with Dental technicians are Cardiac technicians, Dental hygienists, Hearing aid dispensers, Hearing screeners, Nursing associates, Orthotic and prosthetic technicians,

The association also emphasises the need for increased support for training programs. Currently, there are limited training places and courses available across the UK, which are insufficient to meet the demand. Training providers need more support to expand their programs and ensure a steady supply of skilled dental technicians.

Delroy Reeves, President of the DTA, stated, "It is essential that statistics accurately reflect the current crisis in the dental technician profession. We need to address the decline in the workforce and ensure that training programs are adequately supported to meet the demand."

The DTA looks forward to working with relevant authorities to ensure that dental technicians receive the recognition and support they deserve.
