DTA’s President Delroy Reeves Attended the CDO’s Roundtable Discussion

By DTA | 17th April 2024 | News

DTA President Delroy Reeves attended the Chief Dental Officer's Organisation roundtable session, hosted by interim Chief Dental Officer for England Jason Wong during BDIA Showcase, in order to raise important issues on behalf of dental technologists. The session provided a unique opportunity to discuss issues facing the profession and open channels for collaboration between us all.

Delroy reported that there appears to be a lot of positive changes taking place and it is vital that the DTA continues to be involved with future discussion on how to work collaboratively to improve and strengthen the dental team's understanding of dental technologists' vital role as part of the oral health team. The Office of the Chief Dental Officer (OCDO) raised issues such as the workforce crisis, access to work, commissioning, support and current regulation. The OCDO highlighted that its  aim for 2024-25 is to continue to work to positively influence these areas and to support the oral health team.

The DTA Team are working on opening channels of communication with profession-wide organisations and CDO's. The DTA will be raising awareness of issues facing the profession. For example:

● In Northern Ireland the annual intake is around four trainees which does not meet NI employment needs

● The role and training opportunities for dental technicians has been left to the marketplace and thus there are now very few providers across the UK. For Scotland the only provider is based in Aberdeen.

● The urgent need for in Laboratory Apprenticeship schemes with hands-on training combined with learning theory work so that students can get a qualification that would be suitable for GDC registration.

And much, much more.

The DTA would like to thank the OCDO for hosting this roundtable discussion and to also thank President Delroy Reeves for attending on behalf of the DTA.
