Addressing the Training Crisis in Dental Technology in Northern Ireland

The Dental Technologists Association (DTA) has been advocating for the stabilisation of Dental Technician (DT) training in Northern Ireland for the past five years. Despite continuous efforts, the DTA has yet to receive clear answers on how the training of NI Dental Technicians will progress, especially in light of the validating body, Pearsons, announcing the closure of their DT courses.

While other regions in the UK have upgraded their DT courses to Foundation Degrees or similar, incorporating essential complex knowledge, skill development, and basic digital competencies, Northern Ireland remains in limbo. The DTA eagerly awaits official support and progress in support of Dental Technology Training in the UK.

The DTA works tirelessly with education providers across the UK and liaises with the General Dental Council (GDC) to ensure that the views of DTA members are presented logically to decision-makers. The association's efforts in developing the reviewed Scope of Practice and professional activities with the GDC are supported by the voluntary contributions of DTA members. These efforts are crucial for sustaining and building the profession, ensuring the future of Dental Technicians, and promoting oral health for the nation.
