What Britain Really Thinks About Oral Health
By Oral Health Foundation | 22nd June 2026 | News
As part of Smile Month, the Oral Health Foundation and mydentist commissioned new research to better understand the nation's attitudes, habits and knowledge around oral health.
The findings reveal some surprising insights into how people feel about their oral health, the habits they follow, and where there are still important gaps in awareness.
Among the key findings:
- 48% do not brush their teeth twice a day, while 74% do not clean between their teeth daily.
- 32% either do not know or do not believe poor oral health is linked to wider health issues, like diabetes.
- 49% say they would cut down on sugar to improve their health, while 44% say reducing their risk of tooth decay would be a motivating factor.
- 20% say they feel most self-conscious about their teeth when going on a date.
- 53% want schools to do more to educate children about healthy eating and sugar consumption.
The research highlights both the progress being made and the challenges that remain when it comes to oral health in the UK.
It also reinforces the importance of Smile Month's mission to encourage positive habits and help people make informed decisions about their oral health.
Thank you for supporting Smile Month and helping us raise awareness of the importance of good oral health.
