World Oral Health Day: Why a happy mouth means a happier life

By Oral Health Foundation | 1st April 2026 | News

An update from Oral Health Foundation, a charity improving better oral health for all:

World Oral Health Day took place on 20 March 2026, a global moment to shine a spotlight on something that affects us all - the health of our mouths.

This year's theme, "A Happy Mouth Is... A Happy Life," highlights how oral health influences our wellbeing at every stage of life. From childhood through to older age, a healthy mouth helps us eat comfortably, speak clearly and smile with confidence.

Yet for many people across the UK, that simple goal is becoming harder to achieve.

Millions are living with preventable dental problems, and access to NHS dentistry continues to be a major challenge for patients across the country. Tooth decay remains the leading cause of hospital admissions among children aged six to ten in England, while gum disease affects around one-in-two adults.

At the Oral Health Foundation, we believe this must change. Oral health should not be an afterthought within the wider healthcare system. Everyone deserves the opportunity to protect their oral health and access the care they need.

While we continue to campaign for improvements in prevention and access to dental care, there are also simple steps we can all take to look after our mouths:

  • Brush last thing at night and at one other time during the day with fluoride toothpaste.
  • Cut down on sugary foods and drinks.
  • Visit a dental professional regularly.
  • Pay attention to any unusual changes in your mouth.

These small habits can make a huge difference over time.

Today, we're asking you to help us spread the message. By sharing advice, talking about oral health and encouraging healthy habits, we can help more people enjoy the benefits of a healthy mouth and a happier life.

You can learn more about the campaign and find practical oral health advice here.

Listen to our special World Oral Health Day podcast and discover simple ways to improve your smile. Please share it with your family, friends and patients to help spread the message further.

Have a great World Oral Health Day - and keep smiling!

Best wishes,
