President's Blog - April 2019
I hope you all received an email with the link to the March issue of Articulate. Included in the issue is an article on the Professionalism within the Dental Team by Tony Griffin with one hour CPD and development outcome D.
Conference for Dental Care Professionals, Edinburgh
I was delighted to attend DCP conference, hosted by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, on 2 March. Now in its 23rd year this is a much respected and valued conference for all dental care professionals.
This year, the DTA representative, Robert Leggett, spoke about digital dentures – a hot topic for dental technicians and clinical dental technicians. Robert began by telling us that around 50 million dentures are produced globally and of these 1% are produced digitally, at present. He sees that digital processes allow an easier and quicker turnaround with good accuracy, and predicts that 30-50% of denture work will be created digitally within 5-10 years.
The programme also included presentations on implants, tooth whitening, oral health and fascinating session on personality analysis.
During the breaks I was able to chat to other dental technicians from the area to find out their thoughts on the profession.
DTA Survey 2019
Thank you to everyone who has completed and returned the survey. From what I have seen so far, there is a lot of food for thought and I know that the Management Team will be looking at all the feedback in detail at the meeting in June.
Each March we hold elections for Officers – President, Deputy President and Treasurer. The line up for 2019/20 is as follows:
President Delroy Reeves
Deputy President Adrian Rollings
Treasurer Tony Griffin
At this point I would to say a big thank you to John Stacey who has been Deputy President for the past year, his never-ending enthusiasm is a source of inspiration to us all.
FEPPD 65th Anniversary
DTA was invited by President Munerot to attend this special event celebrating the prestigious past of FEPDD.
The event brought together past Presidents and Council members, present Delegates and representatives of supporting entities, that have helped FEPPD in delivering its mission statement over 65 years. I was pleased that my colleague Adrian Rollings represented DTA at this special event held to during IDS 2019 in Cologne.
FEPPD aims to represent Dental Technicians from all European states with one voice, it currently represents 210,000 dental technicians and 40,000 dental laboratories. The meeting discussed the number of dental technicians and laboratories in Europe, educational standards and changes to medical devices regulations. At the end of the session president Laurent Mundrot presented past president Hilde Wahlen with a special award for her services to the FEPPD.
Moving forward date 7th June is European Dental Technicians Day. All dental technicians are encouraged to spread news of the good work that they do with open days and other initiatives.
Adrian is heading up a DTA working group looking at digital developments and will be updating us all on the latest news from IDS in a future issue of The Technologist.
John Stacey, the education portfolio holder for the Association, represented DTA at theClinical Dental Technician Trailblazer on 14th January and 5th March and the Dental Technician Trailblazer Apprenticeship meeting on 28th January.
Myself and colleagues met with the GDC on 26 March to discuss a number of topics including educational and training support for CPD and dental technicians, scope of practice, promoting professionalism amongst the dental team, patient care from the whole dental team and regulation.
We also met with the BDA on 26 March to discuss a number of topics including promoting professionalism amongst the dental team and MDR, which is now in place and will be fully into force May 2020.
