New research report published: 'Understanding and evaluating early career dental professionals'
The GDC have published the findings of a comprehensive research study aimed at understanding the experiences, perceptions, and attitudes of early career dental professionals towards their regulatory body.
The research, commissioned by the GDC and conducted independently by SQW, shows that most early career dental professionals hold either a positive (44%) or neutral (30%) perception of the General Dental Council (GDC), with dental care professionals viewing the GDC more favourably than dentists

Your annual renewal period 2024
Dental technologists, it’s nearly time for you to complete your annual renewal. This year, your renewal opens on 10 June and closes on 31 July 2024. In that time, you’ll need to make sure you’ve done three things: paid your Annual Retention Fee (ARF), checked you have indemnity cover in place, and that you’ve completed your minimum number of CPD hours. This can all be done via your eGDC profile, and you can log in at any time to check how many hours of CPD you need to complete. Dental technicians must complete at least 50 hours for each CPD cycle, and clinical dental technicians need to do at least 75 hours.

Dental surgeons respond to new data on oral health of children in Year 6
The Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID) has as of 1st February published the findings of its oral health survey of schoolchildren in Year 6. It was the first time that this group has been surveyed.
The National Dental Epidemiology Programme (NDEP) survey took place in the 2022-23 academic year, with a total of 53,073 children linked to geographical areas and included in the final analysis.

GDC Priorities: ARF reduced for 2024
Following a detailed and thorough review, the General Dental Council’s (GDC’s) priorities have been approved by their Council for the next three years in line with the Corporate Strategy 2023-2025. In doing so, this has set the budget and Annual Retention Fee (ARF) for 2024.
The ARF for 2024 will be £621 for dentists (a reduction of £69 or 10%) and £96 for dental care professionals (a reduction of £18 or 15.8%).

Making sure you are on track with your CPD
The annual renewal period for dental care professionals opened on 13 June 2022. One of the requirements is to make a compliant CPD statement by the 28 August deadline. Last year around 3,000 (4.5%) dental care professionals did not manage to complete this step on time (for reasons unrelated to COVID-19).
The GDC have looked into why compliance levels appear to be worsening and found a need to improve understanding of the basic requirements of the Enhanced CPD scheme.

Patricia qualified as a dental nurse in 1999 before deciding she wanted to be a dental technician. Update: Vaccination as a Condition of Deployment for Healthcare Workers
The Office of the Chief Dental Officer England has issued an update regarding vaccination as a condition of deployment.
On 6 January 2022, the Government made new legislation, approved by Parliament, which amended the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014 ("the 2014 Regulations"). This extends the scope of mandatory vaccination requirements for staff beyond registered care homes to health and wider social care settings in England.

COVID-19 vaccination for dental teams in England
All dental professionals in England will need to be vaccinated against COVID-19, unless they are exempt for medical reasons, by 1 April 2022. Subject to these changes being agreed by Parliament, this will be a legal requirement for all workers aged 18 and over, working in patient-facing roles in an environment regulated by the CQC, both in the NHS or independent health sector.
There are no legal requirements for vaccination in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.

GDC Update option to pay ARF by instalments
Last month the GDC announced a new pay by instalments option for the Annual Retention Fee (ARF), designed to support dental professionals who pay their own fee by enabling them to spread the cost over the year with quarterly Direct Debits.
This change has now come into effect, the timeframe for choosing this option is very short and you will need to log into your eGDC account and elect the quarterly Direct Debit option no later than 31 May.

Get up to £2,000 for each new apprentice
Employers can receive £2,000 for each new apprentice age 16 to 24, or £1,500 for 25 and over. Employers can spend the payment on anything to support their organisation’s costs, from facilities and travel to uniforms and salaries. This is in addition to the £1,000 payment the government already give to help employers meet the needs of some groups of apprentices in the workplace.
